Lick mat
Why licking calms
Repetitive licking is a self-soothing behavior. It is widely used by behavior consultants as a distraction during nail trims, vet visits, grooming, baths, and home-alone departures. The mat doesn't "train" calm; the licking itself competes with the stress response.
What to spread on it
- Plain canned pumpkin (no spices, no "pie filling").
- Plain yogurt (lactose-tolerant dogs only, try a teaspoon first).
- Wet dog or cat food, the most boring option, also the lowest risk.
- Xylitol-free peanut butter. Read the label, xylitol is fatal to dogs.
- Freeze it for 30–60 minutes to extend the session significantly.
Why it matters
For nail trims, fireworks nights, vet exams, and many separation-anxiety protocols, a frozen lick mat is the single most useful low-cost behavior tool you can keep in the freezer. It buys 5–20 minutes of calm without medication.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I put it in the dishwasher?
- Most silicone lick mats are top-rack dishwasher safe. Check the manufacturer's label.
- Is daily peanut butter okay?
- Small amounts of unsweetened, xylitol-free peanut butter are fine for most dogs. For overweight dogs or those on prescription diets, use their own wet food or a small spoon of plain pumpkin instead.
