Taurine
Why cats need taurine from food
Most mammals synthesize taurine from other sulfur-containing amino acids. Cats produce very little of their own and use it up quickly, so taurine is classified as dietarily essential for them. It is required for normal vision, reproduction, fetal development, bile-salt formation, and, most consequentially in clinical practice, for normal heart-muscle function.
AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles set minimum taurine levels for both dry and canned diets. The canned minimum is higher because moist food appears to bind taurine in ways that reduce absorption.
Dogs and taurine
Dogs make their own taurine, so it is not classified as essential in canine diets. However, several breeds, Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Newfoundlands, have a documented taurine-responsive form of dilated cardiomyopathy, and taurine has been studied as part of the ongoing FDA investigation into diet-associated DCM.
Signs of deficiency
- Central retinal degeneration leading to vision loss
- Dilated cardiomyopathy and signs of heart failure
- Reproductive problems in queens; weakness and developmental issues in kittens
- Poor immune response
Why it matters
Commercial complete-and-balanced cat foods supplement taurine and the catastrophic feline cases of the 1980s are now rare. The risk shows up at the margins: homemade diets that aren't properly formulated, vegetarian cat foods, and, in dogs, atypical-breed DCM that may respond to diet change. Don't improvise around taurine.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I supplement taurine on my own?
- Not without veterinary input. A complete-and-balanced commercial diet should already meet requirements. If your vet identifies a deficiency or breed-related risk, they will direct dosing.
- Is vegetarian cat food safe?
- Vegetarian and vegan diets formulated for cats must add synthetic taurine and several other animal-derived nutrients. Even then, monitoring is recommended. Cats are obligate carnivores; this is a significant tradeoff to take on without veterinary support.
- Does cooking destroy taurine?
- Heat and prolonged storage degrade taurine, which is why commercial diets add a safety margin and why homemade diets need careful formulation, not just intent.
