Frisco Ripstop Dog Life Jacket, Orange, Large

Editor's note

Ripstop nylon is the guide's material for pool days and warm-water travel. It dries fast and packs light, and it gives no warmth, which is the right trade for a summer lake and the wrong one for a cold river. The listing gives a front flotation flap, thick foam side panels, hook-and-loop fastening with buckle straps at neck and belly, and a top handle.

Run the guide's checks before the first swim. The handle should sit above the shoulder blades. The listing does not say how many belly buckles it has, and the guide wants two, so look.

Size by chest girth, measured behind the front legs with the dog standing. Large on the guide's rough map is a 28 to 36 inch chest. Between sizes, go by girth, not length, or it slides forward under the throat in a lift.
