Common health predispositions

  • Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). A 2024 Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study found French Bulldogs roughly 40x more likely than other breeds to be diagnosed with BOAS. Prefer breeders who grade airway function (RFG, U Cambridge) and select for moderate, longer-muzzled phenotype.
  • Heat stroke. Brachycephalic dogs cannot pant efficiently. Royal Veterinary College research identifies French Bulldogs among the highest-risk breeds for environmental heat-related illness, avoid exercise in heat and humidity.
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Screw-tail and short-back conformation predisposes to spinal disease. Avoid jumping from furniture and use ramps.
  • Periodontal disease. Compressed jaw crowds teeth. Daily home brushing and annual professional cleanings under anaesthesia are baseline care.
  • Skin fold dermatitis. Facial folds trap moisture and yeast. Daily wipe-and-dry of folds prevents recurrent infection.

Gear and diet implications

  • Best harness for a French Bulldog. Mandatory, never a neck collar for leash restraint. A Y-front harness clears the airway and avoids tracheal pressure.
  • Best carrier for a French Bulldog. Most airlines refuse brachycephalic breeds in cargo due to heat death risk. Cabin-rated soft carrier is the only safe option, and many airlines still restrict.
  • Best food for a French Bulldog. Predisposed to obesity, which worsens every airway, joint, and spinal issue above. Measure, do not free-feed, and target a lean body condition score.
  • Best bed for a French Bulldog. Orthopedic, low-profile bed avoids jumping; pair with a ramp to couches/beds to reduce IVDD risk.

Welfare-first buying

The French Bulldog became the most-registered breed in the United States in 2022, and demand has outpaced ethical breeding. Most welfare issues in the breed trace to extreme conformation, flat face, narrow nostrils, compressed jaw, screw tail, that the AKC standard does not prohibit. Buyers can change the breed's trajectory by demanding moderation: longer muzzle, open nostrils, longer back, screened airway function.

Avoid 'fluffy', 'merle', 'blue', 'lilac', and 'isabella' Frenchies. These colors are not recognized in the AKC standard, often come from outcrosses or from breeders selecting for novelty over health, and can pair with coat-color-linked alopecia and other disorders.

Daily care

  • Walk in the cool of morning and evening, never midday in summer.
  • Watch breathing at rest. Snoring is common; gagging, snorting at rest, or cyanotic (blue) gums are emergencies.
  • Brush teeth daily with a pet-formulated toothpaste.
  • Wipe facial folds daily and dry thoroughly.
  • Use a ramp for furniture and the car.
  • Maintain a 4-5/9 body condition score, leanness is the single biggest welfare lever owners control.

Training and behavior

Frenchies are food-motivated, people-oriented, and adapt well to apartment life. They are also stubborn, short, positive reinforcement sessions work; long drilling does not. Socialization in the puppy critical period (3-14 weeks) prevents the resource-guarding and reactivity that creeps in when small breeds are over-coddled.
