How much exercise does my dog really need each day?
Rough ranges by breed and age
- Toy and small breeds (Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Yorkie): 30–60 min/day total.
- Medium breeds (Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Border Collie mix): 60–90 min/day.
- Large working breeds (Labrador, German Shepherd, Husky, Australian Shepherd): 90–120+ min/day, much of it off-leash or on long-line if safe.
- Brachycephalic breeds (Bulldog, Pug, Frenchie): short and frequent over long and hard, avoid heat, they cannot pant efficiently.
- Puppies: short bursts, frequent rest. Old rule "5 minutes per month of age twice a day" is conservative and prevents joint damage in large breeds.
- Seniors: shorter walks, more sniff-based, prioritize joint comfort.
Quality matters more than minutes
A 45-minute decompression walk on a long-line in a varied environment (different scents, sights, surfaces) does more for a dog than a 90-minute structured heel along the same suburban block. Sniffing is mentally tiring, it activates the seeking system and lowers arousal. Working-breed dogs whose owners add 20 minutes of structured nose work or training daily often report calmer dogs without adding total exercise time.
