allforpaws Sparkle Peanut Butter Flavor Dog Toothpaste, 2.1-oz

Editor's note

Pet toothpaste is not optional, according to the guide, and not because of what it cleans. It is flavored so the animal cooperates, and it is formulated to be swallowed. This one tastes of peanut butter, and letting the dog lick it off your finger is step three of the guide's slow introduction.

Human toothpaste is the thing to avoid. Fluoride is not meant for swallowing, and xylitol in some brands is seriously toxic to dogs.

Ignore the whitening claims on the listing. A paste does nothing about tartar that has already hardened, or disease below the gumline. What it does is make daily brushing possible, which is the part that matters. The listing is for dogs only.
