Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea & Tick Oatmeal Dog Shampoo, 18-fl oz bottle

Editor's note

The tick guide suggests a quick shampoo after a heavily wooded hike, and this oatmeal formula is its pick. The guide calls oatmeal shampoos gentle enough for weekly use in high-exposure months. It is also clear about the limit, since a bath will not kill an attached tick.

What the wash does is dislodge loose ticks and give you a clean coat for a second look. The listing claims it kills fleas and ticks on contact and is for dogs 6 months and older.

Treat it as a supplement, not the base layer. A dog that walks in tick habitat still needs a preventive from your vet. Harsher pyrethrin blends belong to confirmed infestations, not routine baths.
