Hartz UltraGuard Pro Reflecting Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs & Puppies, 1 Collar (7-mos. supply)

Editor's note

The guide's position on over-the-counter collars is plain. They never replace a prescribed preventive for a dog that regularly walks in tick habitat. They are a supplement, and this is the one the guide attaches. The listing gives seven months of flea and tick protection for dogs from 12 weeks, water resistance, and a reflective strip visible up to 450 feet at night.

Where it goes wrong is being treated as the base layer. The base layer is what your vet prescribes, matched to the dog's weight, age and any seizure history. The collar sits on top of that.

And no collar replaces the second layer, which is a physical check after every outdoor session. Skipping the check is where most cases start.
