Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials 7+ Chicken & Rice Natural Senior Dry Cat Food, 3.5-lb bag

Editor's note

Dry food is not disqualified for an old cat. It is convenient and cheaper per calorie, and plenty of old cats do well on it. The guide's condition is that the cat prefers dry and is drinking well, and its preference is dry alongside wet rather than instead of it. This is its dry base, from a manufacturer that runs feeding trials.

The 7+ on the bag is not a standard. Read the protein and the AAFCO statement on the back.

Watch the bowl. Free-feeding dry to a cat that is gaining produces a slow weight gain nobody notices until it is substantial. Measure the portions, and weigh the cat at home every month or two. If the cat is a healthy weight with normal bloodwork, there is no reason to change anything.
