Uno Purr Dual Length Stainless Teeth Cat Grooming Comb, Yellow

Editor's note

A metal comb is the tool the guide tells you to buy first, and this is its pick. It finds mats while they are still soft, before you can see them, and it reaches the skin through a thick coat. The listing describes two tooth lengths, longer teeth for the top coat and shorter ones for loose undercoat, plus a button that releases collected fur.

It is sold for cats of any coat length. In an older cat, a greasy, clumped rump is often the first sign you get, and the comb is how you notice. That change usually points to pain or illness rather than neglect.

Keep strokes light on thin senior skin, and stop before the cat does.
